Two roofs on one property, done together in a single visit. The main roof stripped off and re-covered in new interlocking tiles with a mechanically fixed dry ridge, and the flat roof taken right back to the joists and rebuilt. Completed August 2026 and photographed on site.
This Hampton property needed two separate pieces of work: the main pitched roof had come to the end of its life and needed stripping and re-covering, and the flat roof over the garage needed replacing rather than patching. Doing both in one visit meant one set of scaffolding, one team and one lot of disruption instead of two.
We inspected both roofs first, explained what each one actually needed and gave a fixed written quote before anything came off. The work was completed in August 2026 by our own team and is covered by our company workmanship guarantee.
The photo on the left is the garage roof with everything taken off, down to the bare joists. That is the point in a flat roof job where you find out what you are really dealing with, and it is the reason we strip rather than overlay.
Felting over an old flat roof is quick and it is cheap, and it is why so many flat roofs get replaced twice. The old covering has usually taken water into the deck below it. Cover it up and that moisture has nowhere to go, so the deck keeps softening underneath a surface that looks perfectly fine from the garden. A year or two later the new felt starts to dip and split where the boards have given way, and the customer pays for the whole job a second time.
Taking it back to the joists costs more on day one and it is the only version that lasts. Once the structure was exposed and sound, a new deck went down and the felt system went on top of that.

The ridge is the line along the very top of a roof, and on older roofs it is the single most common thing we get called out to.
A traditional ridge is bedded on a strip of sand and cement. Mortar expands and contracts with the weather, and eventually it cracks, crumbles and lets go. A dry ridge holds each tile with a mechanical clip and screw, which does not weather in the same way.
When mortar fails, ridge tiles work loose. That is a leak at the highest point of the roof and, in a bad wind, a heavy tile coming off the top of the house. Most of the emergency ridge calls we take are on roofs that were bedded in mortar decades ago.
A dry ridge system leaves a controlled ventilation path along the top of the roof instead of sealing it shut with mortar. Moving air is what keeps moisture out of a roof space, and a roof space that stays dry is one that does not rot.
The main roof came off and went back on with new interlocking tiles and a mechanically fixed dry ridge and hip, so the weakest line on the old roof is now the one least likely to fail. The garage flat roof went back to the joists, took a new deck and a built-up felt system finished in a grey mineral cap, with new edge trim and the upstand dressed in against the parapet.
Doing both together meant one scaffold, one team on site and one disruption to the household rather than two separate jobs months apart. If you have a tired main roof and a flat roof that keeps getting patched, it is almost always worth asking for both to be quoted at once.
