We replace fascias and soffits across Windsor, and it is some of the most common roofline work we price. Much of central Windsor is Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, and where those homes still carry their original timber roofline boards the story is usually the same: decades of repainting, then soft, flaking timber where water has sat behind the gutter. Being based at Castle Hill House in the town centre, we can usually get out to inspect a Windsor roofline quickly.
The town's position by the Thames does the boards no favours either. Damp air and shaded, north-facing elevations keep timber wet for longer, so rot tends to take hold at the gutter line first and spread along the fascia before anyone notices from the ground. Our approach on these older homes is to strip the decayed timber back to sound structure, fit uPVC boards that never need painting, and build eaves ventilation in at the same time so the loft stays dry.

Roofline problems start small and quiet. By the time boards visibly sag, water has usually been at the timber for years. Check yours against these.
Peeling paint on a timber fascia is the first hint. Press it: if the wood gives under your thumb, rot is already inside the board.
Gutter brackets screw into the fascia. When the board softens, fixings loosen, runs drop out of level and water starts spilling over.
Gaps in failing soffits are an open door. Nesting birds and wasps in the roof space almost always got in through a broken roofline.
Damp insulation, misted felt or mould on the rafters can mean the eaves are blocked or unvented and the roof space cannot breathe.
Water running down the wall behind the gutter, rather than into it, points to a decayed fascia top edge or a failed felt overhang.
Splits, holes or a wavy line along the underside of the eaves mean the boards have moved or decayed and the seal is gone.
