Natural slate

Why Natural Slate Is Worth Doing Properly

Slate is the covering the best roofs in Britain have always worn, and it earns its reputation. A natural slate roof, fixed correctly, will outlast almost any other covering on the market and looks sharper every year it weathers.

The catch is that slate punishes shortcuts. It splits if it is nailed too hard, kicks up if the battens are uneven, and slips if the fixings are wrong. That is why our slate work is done the traditional way:

  • Graded natural Spanish slate, sorted by thickness on site so every course sits flat
  • Two fixings per slate, correctly gauged over new felt and battens
  • Proper detailing at ridges, valleys, abutments and chimneys, with lead where lead belongs

The natural Spanish slate roof we completed in Twickenham shows the finish this approach produces. Every slate job is priced in a free written quote and covered by our company workmanship guarantee.

Slate for Period Homes in Richmond, Twickenham & Windsor

Much of our patch is period housing: Victorian terraces in Richmond, Edwardian semis in Twickenham, older streets around Windsor and Eton. These homes were built with natural slate, and it is nearly always the right material to put back.

Swapping slate for chunky modern tiles changes the whole face of a period house, can look wrong against the neighbours, and on some properties falls foul of conservation rules. Re-slating in natural slate keeps the roofline the architect intended and protects the value of the property.

Where the original slates are sound we can grade and relay them over new felt and battens, topping up with matching slate. Where they are done, new Spanish slate gives the same character with another lifetime of service in it. Either way, the recommendation and the price arrive in a free written quote.

Repairs & re-slating

Slate Repairs & Re-Slating

Slate roofs fail in their own particular ways. Knowing which failure you are looking at is what separates a lasting fix from a roof that sheds another slate every windy night.

Slipped & Missing Slates

Individual slates refixed discreetly so the repair does not scar the roof. We match size, thickness and colour so the new slate disappears into the field.

Nail Sickness

When the original nails corrode, slates slip one after another across the roof. We diagnose it honestly: once fixings are failing everywhere, re-slating beats endless patching.

Full Re-Slating

The roof stripped, felt and battens renewed, and slate laid back correctly, reusing sound originals where possible and grading in new Spanish slate where not.

FAQs

Slate Roof Questions, Answered

Yes. Spain produces most of the world's roofing slate and good Spanish slate is dense, low in water absorption and consistent in thickness, which is why it is the standard choice for natural slate roofs in the UK. We select graded slate and sort it on site so each course lays flat and even, as we did on our recent Twickenham roof.
Usually it is not the slates that have failed but the nails holding them, a problem roofers call nail sickness. The old iron nails corrode through, and slates start sliding one after another. A few slips can be refixed, but once it is happening across the roof, re-slating is the honest answer because every fixing is the same age.
Often, partly. Sound slates can be taken off carefully, graded and relaid over new felt and battens, topped up with matching slate where needed. On period streets in Richmond and Twickenham this keeps the roof looking as it always has. We assess how much is reusable during the free survey.
In most cases it is what the house was built with, so yes. Victorian and Edwardian homes around Richmond, Twickenham and Windsor were typically roofed in natural slate, and replacing it with the same material keeps the character and the value of the property. We detail ridges, valleys and flashings in keeping with the original roof.
Yes. Slate installations, re-slating and slate repairs are all covered by our company workmanship guarantee, and we are fully insured on every job.
