Chalfont St Peter is the biggest of the Chalfont villages and the most varied. The old centre around the church and the Misbourne still has its cottages and older brick houses, but most of the village was built between the 1920s and the 1970s: semis and detached houses off the A413, around Gold Hill Common and Austenwood Common, and out towards Chalfont Common. That means concrete interlocking tiles, plain clay tiles and the occasional slate roof, all reaching the age where they need attention at once.
Chalfont St Giles, down the valley, is the picture-postcard end, with its green, its pond and the cottages around Milton's Cottage, and a run of larger period houses on the roads out. Roofs there are older and more delicate, and repairs need matching tiles and careful leadwork rather than the nearest thing off the merchant's shelf.
