Roofers in Croydon

Croydon is really two roofing towns. Around Addiscombe, Thornton Heath, Broad Green and the streets off the London Road you have Victorian and Edwardian terraces, most of them under natural slate or old clay tile, with tall shared chimney stacks and lead valleys between the front and back roofs. Out towards Shirley, Selsdon and Sanderstead it is 1930s semis and detached houses with big hipped roofs in plain clay or concrete tile, bay windows with their own little tiled roofs, and a garage or extension with a flat roof on the side.

Both types fail in their own way. The older slate roofs lose nails and slates start slipping one by one, the valleys and chimney flashings go long before the slates do, and years of patching with whatever was in the van leaves a roof that leaks somewhere new every winter. The 1930s roofs were often laid without any felt at all, so once the tiles and torching go, wind-driven rain gets straight into the loft. Flat roofs on Croydon extensions are usually felt that has done its 15 to 20 years and is now blistering and splitting at the edges.
