Slate roof repair in Windsor, Berkshire and South West London: slipped and broken slates, failed nails, worn valleys and flashings repaired in matching natural slate. Book a free roof inspection and you get photos of the fault and a fixed written quote.
Natural slate is stone. A good slate lasts for a century or more. The nails holding it do not. On older slate roofs across Windsor, Eton, Richmond and Twickenham, the iron nails rust through long before the slate wears out, and the slates start to slide. Roofers call it nail sickness.
The faults we repair on slate roofs every month:
Slates in the gutter or on the path, a gap you can see from the street or a damp patch in the top-floor ceiling all mean it is time for an inspection.
A slate cannot be nailed back through the slate above it. This is how a single slate goes back for good.
We cut the rusted nails with a slate ripper and draw out the broken or slipped slate without disturbing the ones around it.
A replacement of the same size, thickness and colour, from new or reclaimed natural slate to suit your roof.
The new slate is slid into place and held with a tingle, a strip of lead or copper fixed to the batten and folded up over its tail.
We check the courses either side and above, because where one nail has rusted through, others are close behind.
The worst slate repairs we see are the ones done with whatever was in the van: a fibre cement slate in a natural slate roof, a concrete tile pushed into a gap, or a slate glued in place with mastic. They stand out from the street, they do not weather the same way and most of them leak within a few years.
We repair natural slate in natural slate. Slates come in different sizes and thicknesses, and Welsh, Spanish and other slates differ in colour, so we match yours by measuring and checking a slate from your roof, not by guessing from the ground. On older roofs a reclaimed slate is often the closest match for colour and weathering.
When we find nail sickness right across a slope, we tell you straight. Tingling dozens of slates one at a time costs more over a few years than stripping the slope, re-felting, re-battening and re-slating it with copper nails, and we will price both so you can compare.
Our roof repair cost guide puts slipped or cracked slates and tiles, one to five at a time, at £150 to £400 for 2026, including matching and checking the surrounding courses. A valley repair or reline is £350 to £900, and a lead flashing repair £200 to £500.
The guide is clear about where the price moves: natural slate on period homes takes sourcing, sometimes reclaimed, and costs a little more than a common tile. Access is the other big factor. A repair we reach from a ladder or tower costs a fraction of one that needs scaffolding.
When the nails have failed across the whole roof, the comparison is with a re-slate. Our new roof cost guide puts natural slate at £120 to £180 per square metre with a lifespan of 80 to 100 years. We put both options in writing with photos, and you decide.
