Spain is one of the largest producers of natural roofing slate in the world, and good Spanish slate has become the first choice for new slate roofs across the south of England. It gives you what natural slate is loved for, a deep colour and crisp, even courses, with a consistency of colour and thickness that makes for a clean, regular finish.
It suits the houses we work on. Twickenham, Richmond, Windsor and Eton are full of Victorian and Edwardian homes that were built with slate, and a new slate roof keeps their character and their value where a concrete tile would flatten it.
What to look for in a slate:
Slating is skilled work. Every slate is laid by hand to a set-out, and the finish shows whether that was done properly.
The old covering, battens and felt come off. Rafters are checked and the roof made sound before anything new goes on.
New breathable membrane, then treated battens set out to the gauge of the slate so every course is true.
Slates are sorted by thickness and laid course by course from the eaves, nailed and lapped to suit the pitch.
Valleys, verges and abutments cut and finished, lead flashings dressed in, then the ridge fixed and the site cleared.
A slate roof shows every mistake. Courses that wander, slates of different thickness side by side, badly cut verges and rough valleys are visible from the street for the next hundred years. That is why the set-out matters so much: the battens are measured to the slate before the first one goes on, so the courses run straight and the margins stay even from eaves to ridge.
Natural slates also vary slightly in thickness, even from a good quarry. We grade them on site, laying the thicker slates lower on the roof and the thinner ones higher, so every course sits flat.
The finish on our Twickenham roof is the result: crisp, uniform courses in a deep natural colour that suit the period street and will stand up to the British weather for generations.
Our new roof cost guide puts natural slate at £120 to £180 per square metre supply and fit for 2026, with a typical lifespan of 80 to 100 years. By property, a 2-bed terrace is £8,000 to £12,000, a 3-bed semi-detached £10,000 to £15,000 and a 4-bed detached £14,000 to £22,000, including scaffolding, strip and disposal, new membrane and battens.
That is more than tile up front. Spread over the life of the roof, it is the longest-lasting covering we fit, and on a period home it adds to the value of the house rather than taking from it.

The old covering had reached the end of its life and the homeowner wanted a replacement that would last for generations. We supplied and laid natural Spanish slate across the full roof, with our own team, the site kept tidy and swept clean on completion.
