After the storm

What High Wind Does to a Roof

Wind does not push a roof down, it lifts it. Gusts running over the ridge and round the eaves create suction that pulls at every loose tile, every tired ridge bed and every edge of lead. The damage we are called to after a storm in Windsor and Berkshire is the same list every time:

  • Tiles lifted or missing, often from the edges, the verges and the slope facing the wind
  • Ridge and hip tiles loosened or blown off where the old mortar had already cracked
  • Torn felt flapping under the tiles, or visible through a gap from the loft
  • Lead flashings peeled up from chimneys, walls and bay roofs
  • Flat roof coverings lifted at the edges or split along a seam

Stay off the roof and out from under it. Check the loft with a torch for daylight or water, move anything valuable away from a drip, take photos from the ground and call us.

How we respond

Safe Tonight, Repaired Properly After

A storm repair is two jobs: stopping the water now, and fixing the roof so it survives the next one.

01

Answer the Call

We answer 24 hours a day. You speak to the team who turn up, not an answering service.

02

Make It Safe

Loose tiles and ridge pieces are secured or taken down and the opening weathered, so no more water gets in.

03

Record the Damage

Every damaged area is photographed and listed in writing, ready for your insurer if you are making a claim.

04

Repair Properly

A fixed written quote for the permanent repair, then new tiles, lead, felt or ridge fitted to last.

Built for the next storm

Repaired to Hold in the Next Gale

Putting blown tiles back exactly as they were means putting them back the way that failed. So the permanent repair goes further. Ridge and hip tiles that came off a mortar bed are refixed mechanically, or the ridge is upgraded to a dry ridge with every tile clipped and screwed. Lifted lead is redressed and wedged in, or renewed in new lead where it has split.

Where the felt has torn, we cut back to sound felt and lap in breathable membrane so water that gets past the tiles is carried out again. Battens that snapped are replaced in treated timber, and every tile we refix gets new fixings.

We check the rest of the roof while we are up there. One storm often loosens more than it removes, and a tile that rattled but stayed put this time is the one that goes in the next gale.

Insurance and cost

Storm Damage Costs and Insurance Claims

Our roof repair cost guide puts a 2026 storm damage make-safe and repair at £150 to £600, documented with photos for your insurance claim. Bigger damage over a whole slope is priced on inspection. A make-safe in the middle of the night is a different job from a planned repair, and we agree that price with you up front before we attend, never after.

If you are claiming, the photos and written description we give you show your insurer what was damaged and what caused it. Your policy decides what is covered: sudden storm damage and long-term wear are treated differently, so it pays to have an honest record of which is which.

And if the storm has simply exposed a roof that was already failing everywhere, we will say so. Patching a worn-out roof after every gale costs more over a few years than replacing it, and you deserve that comparison in writing.

Real work

Proof: A Roof That Had Started to Fall Away, East Ham

This nearly 100-year-old house in East Ham was still on its original roof, and it had started to fall away. Cornelius inspected it the morning after the enquiry, the scaffold went up the same day and our own team rebuilt it from the rafters in two days, as quoted.

Storm Damage Questions, Answered

Stay off the roof and keep clear of anything that is hanging loose. Check the loft for daylight or water, move valuables away from any drips, photograph the damage from the ground and call us. We answer 24 hours a day and make the roof safe first.
We photograph every damaged area and give you a written description of what was damaged and what caused it. That is the evidence your insurer asks for. What your policy pays for is between you and your insurer, but you go into the claim with a proper record.
We answer 24 hours a day. If it is safe to work, we secure loose tiles and stop water coming in. If the wind makes the roof unsafe to climb, we tell you straight and we are there as soon as it drops.
Wind picks off the weakest points first: tiles with rusted fixings, ridge tiles on cracked mortar and the edges facing the wind. That is why we check the rest of the roof while we are up there, because a tile that rattled loose this time is the one that goes next.
Our 2026 roof repair cost guide puts a storm damage make-safe and repair at £150 to £600, with photos for your insurer. Larger damage is priced on inspection, and any out-of-hours make-safe price is agreed with you before we attend.
