What a dry ridge is

No Mortar, Nothing to Crack

A traditional ridge holds each ridge tile on a bed of sand and cement. A dry ridge system replaces that mortar with a mechanical fixing. A ridge batten is fixed along the top of the roof, a ventilated roll is laid over it and dressed down onto the tiles either side, and every ridge tile is screwed down through a clip into the batten. Union pieces seal the joints between ridge tiles and end caps close the ends.

The same system works on hips, the sloping ridges that run down the corners of a hipped roof. On a dry hip each hip tile is fixed the same way, with a hip iron at the bottom to hold the line.

What you get:

  • Nothing to repoint, because there is no mortar to crack or wash out
  • Ridge tiles that stay put in high wind, because each one is screwed down
  • A ventilated ridge that lets damp air out of the roof space
  • A clean, straight line along the top of the roof

How we fit it

Fitting a Dry Ridge, Step by Step

On a new roof the dry ridge is the last stage of the build. On an existing roof it replaces the old mortar ridge in one visit.

01

Remove the Old Ridge

On an existing roof the old ridge tiles come off and the mortar bed is cleared back to the top course of tiles.

02

Fix the Batten

A treated ridge batten is fixed along the line of the ridge at the right height for your ridge tile.

03

Lay the Roll

The ventilated roll goes down over the batten and is pressed onto the tiles either side to seal against rain.

04

Screw and Seal

Each ridge tile is clipped and screwed down, the joints sealed with union pieces and the ends capped.

Why we fit it as standard

Why Every New Roof We Build Gets a Dry Ridge

The ridge is the most exposed line on your roof and, on older homes, the thing we are called out to more than anything else. Mortar expands and contracts with the weather, cracks, loosens and lets go, and then the ridge leaks at its highest point or a ridge tile comes off in a storm. Most of the emergency ridge calls we take are on roofs that were bedded in mortar decades ago.

The current British Standard for tiling and slating, BS 5534, calls for ridge and hip tiles to be mechanically fixed, not held by mortar alone. A dry ridge meets that by design. That is why it goes on every new roof we build, including our recent re-roofs in East Ham, Fleet, Hampton and Kingston upon Thames.

The ventilated roll matters too. Moist air from the house collects at the top of the roof space. A dry ridge gives it a way out, which helps keep your rafters and battens dry for the life of the roof.

Upgrade or repoint

What a Dry Ridge Costs, and When to Upgrade

On a new roof the dry ridge is already included in the price. Our new roof cost guide covers full replacements, with a 3-bed semi in concrete tile at £7,000 to £11,000.

On an existing roof, converting a failing mortar ridge to a dry ridge is priced in the same bracket as rebedding it. Our roof repair cost guide puts ridge tiles rebedded or refixed at £200 to £600 for 2026, and the length of the ridge, the number of hips and the access set where yours falls. The upgrade makes most sense when the mortar has failed along the whole ridge: you pay once and never repoint it again.

A dry ridge is not the right look for every house. On some period homes in a conservation area a traditional mortar ridge suits the street better, and then we rebed and repoint it with the tiles mechanically fixed as well. See our ridge tile repointing page for that option.

Real work

Proof: Dry Ridge and Dry Hips in East Ham

This East Ham re-roof had several hips running down from the ridge. Every ridge and hip tile was clipped and screwed onto a ventilated dry system, with lead dressed in where the hips meet the ridge. No mortar anywhere on the top of the roof.

FAQs

Dry Ridge Questions, Answered

On most homes, yes. There is no mortar to crack or wash out, each ridge tile is screwed down so it stays put in high wind, and the ridge is ventilated. It also meets the BS 5534 requirement for mechanical fixing by design.
Yes. We take off the old ridge tiles, clear the mortar, fix a new ridge batten and ventilated roll, then screw the ridge tiles back down. Sound ridge tiles are reused and any cracked ones are replaced with a match.
Yes. A dry hip uses the same clip and screw fixing on the hip tiles running down the corners of the roof, with a hip iron at the bottom. We fitted dry ridge and dry hips together on our East Ham re-roof.
From the street it looks like a clean, straight ridge line. Up close you see a neat seal along each side instead of mortar. On some period homes in conservation areas a traditional mortar ridge suits the house better, and we tell you if yours is one.
It is included in every new roof we quote. As an upgrade on an existing roof, our 2026 roof repair cost guide puts ridge tiles rebedded or refixed at £200 to £600, and a dry ridge conversion is priced in that bracket after the free inspection.
